Potential Shift in Headlight Regulations Looms as Bright LED Lights Come Under Examination

Campaigners are raising alarms over the increasing use of LED headlights, asserting that drivers are feeling the effects of their brightness more acutely. In a recent Parliamentary session, Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood addressed concerns, stating current road collision statistics do not indicate a negative trend linked to lighting advances. However, AA President Edmund King shared that many drivers report being “blinded” by these lights, particularly those on higher vehicles like SUVs. Data from 2023 shows dazzling headlights contributed to 216 incidents, with the highest occurrences in Kent and Surrey. While this reflects a decrease since 2017, it marks a slight rise from previous years. The government is awaiting independent research on headlight glare, due to be published in summer 2025, to better understand and address these concerns.
