Progress in Blue Light Technology to Combat Foodborne Illness

Researchers at the University of Georgia’s Center for Food Safety are exploring the use of antimicrobial blue light (aBL) produced by LEDs as a novel method for ensuring food safety in manufacturing facilities. Traditional cleaning methods are often ineffective against persistent biofilms, which can harbor harmful pathogens like Listeria monocytogenes. The aBL technology, which is safe for humans and environmentally friendly, has shown promise in eliminating foodborne pathogens without requiring production downtime or hazardous chemicals. The research team, led by Francisco Diez and including international collaborators, is investigating how different surface materials affect the efficacy of aBL. While further studies are needed, the technology could lead to significant improvements in food safety practices by facilitating continuous disinfection along production lines.
