Mount Vernon School is facing opposition from residents of Mount Vernon Woods and Aria West regarding its proposal to install lighting on its athletic field, which would allow for extended practice times and later football games. The school’s demonstration of various lighting options, including “dark sky” technology, aimed to alleviate concerns about light pollution, but community members remain skeptical. The school is seeking to revise its conditional use permit, with existing agreements prohibiting lights set to expire next year. Residents argue that these agreements were intended to maintain the tranquility of their neighborhoods, having previously supported the school’s expansion without light installation. While the school maintains modern lighting can minimize glare and noise, local homeowners contest the viability of these claims, citing concerns about proximity to their homes. A decision by the Sandy Springs Planning Commission is expected at their meeting on December 18.
