Former MIT linebacker and mechanical engineer Kodiak Brush ’17 has made significant strides in football helmet safety with his work at LIGHT Helmets, where he led the development of the Apache helmet line. Recently recognized as the highest-performing helmet in safety tests by Virginia Tech, the Apache helmets are designed to be both lighter and more protective, featuring innovative materials that allow for better energy absorption during impacts. Brush’s experience in football has fueled his passion for creating safer equipment, reflecting on the challenges of concussions in the sport. With a vision of expanding their market, Brush anticipates a tenfold increase in helmet sales this year, as LIGHT Helmets gains traction, with players across NFL teams already opting for their product. As Brush balances his engineering duties, he finds a renewed sense of connection to football, now rooting for players sporting his helmets.
