The Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi is set to replace approximately 2.8 lakh yellow sodium vapor streetlights with smart LED lights to enhance safety, especially for women commuters. This initiative, originally launched by the AAP government on a pilot basis, aims to eliminate dark spots in the city, with 40,000 LED lights planned for installation in North, Northwest, and Southwest districts at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore. The new smart LED lights feature an astronomical timer that automatically turns them on and off based on daylight, providing brighter illumination while conserving energy. Currently, PWD manages about 92,163 streetlights, with 90,666 operational, and efforts are underway to address 1,697 identified dark spots, with 400 already fixed.
