Reading is set to launch a £9.8 million project on April 4th to upgrade its street lighting with energy-efficient LED technology. The initiative, funded by £6.86 million from the government’s Highways Challenge Fund and £2.94 million from Reading Borough Council, aims to replace 11,329 old lanterns, resulting in significant cost savings on energy and maintenance. Over the two-year project, managed by Volker Highways, 2,533 street lighting columns, 2,578 sign lights, and 890 illuminated bollards will also be upgraded. Councillor Tony Page emphasized that the new lighting will enhance safety for pedestrians, reduce the council’s carbon footprint, and minimize light pollution, allowing for clearer night skies. The investment is projected to pay for itself within 20 years.
