In an effort to combat light pollution that can affect visibility for over 100 miles, Pitkin County has enacted a new lighting code set to take effect on February 21, following approval from the Pitkin Board of County Commissioners. The revised regulations will limit exterior lighting in unincorporated areas for both residential and commercial properties, mandating that lights be turned off between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., with certain exceptions. Stricter guidelines are also introduced regarding the type and amount of lighting allowed, including prohibitions on illuminating building facades and seasonal lighting outside specified dates. The code incorporates three overlay zones with varying ambient lighting restrictions and encourages the use of shielded lights that direct illumination downward to minimize light trespass. Existing non-compliant lighting will have a five-year grace period to transition into compliance, with public education efforts planned to facilitate adherence to the new standards.
