Reducing Nighttime Light Can Save Birds This Fall

As the fall migration season intensifies, the Vancouver Audubon Society urges Clark County residents to minimize outdoor lighting to help protect the increasing number of nocturnal birds passing through the area. Birdcast reports an estimated 201,700 birds crossed the skies overnight recently, a number expected to rise until November. The bright lights can disorient migrating birds, leading to dangerous collisions with buildings and other hazards, contributing to an estimated 100 million bird fatalities in the U.S. each year due to light pollution. In response, the Vancouver city government is developing a Green Building Policy, including dark sky standards, while local Audubon efforts focus on educating the community about the importance of reducing light pollution. An upcoming event on World Migratory Bird Day, scheduled for October 12 at McConnell Park, will feature activities aimed at raising awareness about bird conservation.
