Request Filed for New Dark Skies-Compatible Lighting on Historic Mayo Bridge

A planning declaration has been requested to remove and replace the existing lighting on the Newport Viaduct Bridge in west Mayo with new Dark Skies Friendly fixtures. This initiative is part of Newport’s broader effort to become a Dark Sky friendly town, guided by an innovative energy master plan that includes switching to LED lighting and dimming public lights after midnight. The current floodlights have been identified as significant contributors to light pollution, affecting both the viaduct and St. Patrick’s Church, which has already undergone a lighting upgrade to address these concerns. A decision regarding the declaration is expected by mid-July.
