King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) has successfully localized blue light-emitting diode (LED) technology, a significant step in enhancing energy-efficient lighting solutions. This development not only demonstrates KACST’s commitment to fostering research and innovation but also emphasizes the training of national talent through its Saudi Semiconductor Program. The new technology significantly reduces energy consumption by up to 80% and boasts an efficiency of 200 lumens per watt, compared to just 16 lumens per watt from traditional bulbs. Additionally, the LEDs have a lifespan twenty times longer than conventional options, contributing to less electronic waste and lower greenhouse gas emissions. This achievement aligns with Saudi Vision 2030’s goals of industrial leadership and economic diversification, positioning the Kingdom competitively on a global scale while supporting sustainable development initiatives.
