A recent study conducted by the University of Exeter and Fishtek Marine has found that fishing pots equipped with LED lights can significantly increase catches, attracting up to 19 times more northern shrimp than traditional unlit pots. The research indicates that the lights draw zooplankton, which in turn attract shrimp and larger fish predators. This “attraction cascade” makes the pots effectively self-baiting. Though the trial, performed off Scotland’s west coast, did not yield commercially viable shrimp quantities, the findings signal potential for enhanced catches in shrimp-rich areas. Experts emphasize the importance of lower-impact fishing methods, like static gear, to promote sustainable fisheries and reduce habitat disruption. The study was supported by the UK Seafood Innovation Fund and Schmidt Marine Technology Partners.
