A new study from Flinders University and Monash University has revealed that blue-enriched lighting in casinos can significantly lower sensitivity to financial losses, encouraging riskier gambling behavior. Published in Nature’s Scientific Reports, the research highlights how this type of lighting impacts brain regions involved in emotional processing and risk assessment, effectively dampening the negative perceptions of monetary losses. The study found that a loss of $100 under blue lighting did not feel much worse than a gain of the same amount, challenging the concept of loss aversion central to cautious decision-making. Additionally, gender differences were noted: women exhibited greater loss aversion than men. These findings raise ethical concerns about the manipulation of lighting in gambling environments and call for enhanced regulations to promote responsible gambling practices.
