Researchers Create Deep-Blue LEDs Promising Significant Improvements in General Lighting

A team of scientists led by Rutgers University has made a groundbreaking discovery in eco-friendly lighting technology by developing a new copper-iodide hybrid material that generates deep-blue light for LEDs. This innovative material shines at about 450 nm, offering superior stability and efficiency compared to existing options, which often rely on toxic components. The team’s research, published in Nature, reveals that this hybrid emits light with a photoluminescence quantum yield of nearly 99.6% and achieves a remarkable external quantum efficiency of 12.6%. The researchers employed a novel technique called dual interfacial hydrogen-bond passivation to enhance performance significantly, paving the way for brighter, longer-lasting, and more sustainable LED technologies. This advancement holds promise for revolutionizing general lighting applications as a safer alternative to current LED materials.
