Researchers Create Deep-Blue LEDs Promising Significant Improvements in General Lighting

A research team at Rutgers University has developed an innovative hybrid copper-iodide material capable of emitting deep-blue light, enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This eco-friendly, highly stable material exhibits a remarkable photoluminescence quantum yield of 99.6% and an external quantum efficiency of 12.6%, making it a strong contender for improving blue LED technology. The new process, incorporating dual interfacial hydrogen-bond passivation, significantly reduces defects that hinder performance, resulting in longer-lasting LEDs with an operational half-lifetime of 204 hours. This breakthrough, detailed in Nature, positions the hybrid material as a promising alternative to conventional, often toxic components, paving the way for brighter and more environmentally friendly lighting solutions.
