A student research team from the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence, led by Professor Carolyn Lorimer, has designed an innovative greenhouse aimed at addressing Canada’s food insecurity crisis. With most greenhouses relying on natural gas, the new design prioritizes energy efficiency and sustainability, featuring enhanced insulation and solar panels to reduce heating costs and emissions. Set to include a hydroponic and aquaponic system, the greenhouse will cultivate fish and plants in a self-sustaining ecosystem. With this scalable solution, Lorimer envisions increasing access to affordable, locally-produced food, challenging reliance on imports, while making the greenhouse’s plans freely available to inspire similar initiatives.
