Researchers at South China Agricultural University have created glowing succulents that offer a sustainable alternative to conventional lighting. Published in the journal Matter, the study highlights how these plants, infused with micron-sized afterglow phosphor particles, absorb sunlight or LED light and release a vibrant glow lasting up to two hours. Unlike previous efforts, this breakthrough allows for bright, multicoloured illumination akin to small night lights, inspired by the luminescent landscapes of Avatar. This technology has potential applications in urban planning and architecture, promoting eco-friendly designs while significantly reducing energy consumption. The successful creation of these glowing plants may usher in an era of bioluminescent urban environments, integrating technology with nature.
