New Mexico State University’s Grants campus has inaugurated a cutting-edge 40-foot container farm, serving as a hands-on educational tool for students and researchers exploring sustainable indoor agriculture. Inside the container, a sophisticated vertical farming system employs red and blue LED lights to mimic sunlight while nurturing kale plants from seed to harvest in a controlled environment. Launched in early 2021 through a collaboration with Tri-State Generation and the Electric Power Research Institute, the farm is designed to address the challenges of farming in New Mexico’s semi-arid climate by optimizing water and land use. Currently, over 12,000 plants are being cultivated, with students gaining valuable experience in agricultural technologies, data collection, and crop production. Building on the success of the Grants farm, a similar project is underway at NMSU’s Las Cruces campus, incorporating input from engineering students to enhance its design. This multidisciplinary approach aims to further advance sustainable urban agriculture practices within the region.
