St. Luke’s Park in Ottawa has undergone a significant upgrade with the installation of lighting on its historic basketball court, allowing games to continue after dark. Recognized as Ottawa’s answer to New York City’s Rucker Park, this enhancement not only improves the playing conditions but also serves as a critical equity step for marginalized communities. Previously, the basketball court lacked lighting and amenities, causing frustration among users who felt neglected compared to nearby tennis facilities. The project, spearheaded by Somerset Ward Councillor Ariel Troster and community leaders, involved extensive local engagement and ensured environmentally-friendly upgrades to the court. The reopening celebration on August 16 drew a large crowd, highlighting the court’s community significance and featuring various matches. This revitalization reflects a broader commitment to inclusivity and community development within the sport.
