In a significant advancement for augmented reality (AR) display technology, researchers led by Professor Xiao Wei Sun from the Southern University of Science and Technology have developed an innovative achromatic metasurface waveguide. This new system addresses the prevalent issue of chromatic dispersion, which causes image distortion and limits color fidelity in existing AR devices like HoloLens and Meta Orion. By utilizing inverse-designed metasurface couplers that harness different diffraction orders for red, green, and blue wavelengths, the technology ensures uniform deflection angles and eliminates chromatic aberration. Additionally, its single-layer design simplifies manufacturing while enhancing performance and expanding field of view. This breakthrough promises to transform AR display capabilities, offering superior full-color quality and setting the stage for the next generation of AR devices.
