Rising Electricity Costs Create New Prospects for Taiwan’s LED Lighting Industry

Taiwan’s government has announced significant electricity rate hikes, set to take effect on May 15, with manufacturing rates increasing by 35%, commercial rates by 30%, and residential rates by 11%. In response, local businesses are ramping up their adoption of LED lighting, benefiting the island’s LED industry. Major manufacturers like Delta Electronics and Everlight are already seeing strong demand, with some products out of stock in hypermarkets. Unity Opto Technology Co. recently secured a substantial NT$30 million order for LED tubes, highlighting a surge in orders since the rate increase announcement. This increased demand is also boosting capacity utilization for LED chipmakers such as Epistar and Formosa Epitaxy Inc.
