Currently, the design plans for the new track lack sports lighting, which advocates argue could enhance safety and accessibility for the community, especially for the 8+ million New Yorkers who often rely on evening hours for exercise. They contend that proper lighting would reduce risks of accidents and injuries after dark, and that adding lights now is a cost-effective solution compared to retrofitting in the future. Their campaign gained momentum when Community Board 3 unanimously passed a resolution supporting the initiative, highlighting the track’s role as a vital public resource in Manhattan.
