The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST), associated with the University of Sharjah, recently hosted an awareness event titled “Towards a Light Pollution-Free Sky in Sharjah” to coincide with International Dark Sky Week 2025. This initiative drew a diverse audience of astronomy and environmental enthusiasts, highlighting the critical need to combat light pollution, which adversely impacts ecosystems and human health. Fatima Alkhateri, Director of the Sharjah Astronomical Planetarium, opened the event by stressing the collective responsibility of protecting the night sky. Attendees participated in interactive workshops focused on the science and implications of light pollution, including hands-on activities that modeled its effects on stargazing. The event culminated in a live stargazing experience, where participants utilized advanced telescopes to observe the night sky and understand the significance of preserving dark skies.
