Sandia National Laboratories Forecasts Diode Laser Lighting as a Potential Competitor to LED Technology

Recent research from Sandia National Laboratories suggests that diode lasers may soon rival LEDs as a viable option for both home and commercial lighting. Participants in the study expressed a preference for diode laser lighting in certain scenarios, highlighting its potential advantages. While LEDs are celebrated for their energy efficiency, they lose efficacy at currents above 0.5 amps, whereas diode lasers gain efficiency with higher currents, producing more light. Despite historical assumptions that diode lasers emit harsh light, the findings revealed a significant preference for diode-laser-based white light compared to warm and cool LED lights. However, a shift to diode lasers in the market is unlikely in the near term, as they are currently more expensive to produce and still require development, particularly for yellow and green laser diodes. The warm white light favored by consumers is achieved through a combination of various laser colors.
