The City of Santa Maria will celebrate a milestone in local sports facilities with the inaugural “Flip the Switch” event on Wednesday, October 30, at 6:15 p.m. This event marks the completion of a $3 million project that has installed state-of-the-art LED lighting at Crossroads Basin and Adam Basin, significantly extending operational hours for athletes during the fall and winter months. Santa Maria Recreation Services Manager Dennis Smitherman highlighted the project as a “game-changer” for local field sports, aimed at meeting the community’s growing demand for post-school athletic opportunities. The new lighting is designed to minimize disturbance to nearby residences. Although the ribbon-cutting will occur only at Crossroads Basin, both facilities will be illuminated and available for public use, with reservations required. The funding for this enhancement comes from the American Rescue Plan Act, underscoring the city’s commitment to improving recreational facilities. For reservations and more info, residents can contact the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department.
