In response to a significant decline in Dungeness crab populations in the Pacific Northwest, researchers at the MaST Center Aquarium in Des Moines have initiated a comprehensive study aimed at understanding crab abundance patterns. Utilizing light traps to capture crab larvae, scientists are collecting vital data to help prevent future fishery crises similar to the sudden collapse experienced in South Puget Sound between 2012 and 2017, where crab catches plummeted from 214,404 pounds to just 8,679 pounds. The Pacific Northwest Crab Research Group (PCRG) was established to conduct collaborative research involving over 80 partners, focusing on the ecological and economic importance of Dungeness crabs. As monitoring continues, researchers stress the need for historical data to adapt to environmental changes and improve fishery management strategies. The initiative encourages community involvement, inviting volunteers to assist with data collection efforts while emphasizing the simplicity of the traps used.
