A recent study from Hong Kong reveals that during Earth Hour, when millions turn off their lights, the night sky above urban areas can become significantly darker—up to 50%—due to the reduction of light from a limited number of decorative buildings and advertising screens. Analyzing 14 years of data, researchers found that turning off lights in central business districts leads to the most substantial improvements in night sky visibility. This research challenges assumptions regarding the primary contributors to light pollution, highlighting that high-impact sources like LED screens and façade lighting are the main culprits rather than residential use. The study also provides a roadmap for policymakers: by focusing on regulating the brightest commercial lighting, cities can effectively tackle light pollution, benefiting both urban residents and the environment.
