Seoul Semiconductor Co. of South Korea has achieved a significant legal victory against Taiwan’s Everlight Electronics Co., as the European Patent Office’s Board of Appeal dismissed a challenge to Seoul’s patent for its no-wire LED technology, known as Wafer Integrated Chip on PCB (WICOP). This ruling upholds Seoul’s patents across 18 European countries and marks the 17th consecutive win for the company in its seven-year dispute with Everlight, which has been accused of using WICOP technology in its products. The cases, which have included 16 previous lawsuits won by Seoul in five countries, focus on the innovative WICOP technology and its critical applications in lighting, automotive, and display industries. This success underscores Seoul Semiconductor’s commitment to research and development, having invested about $100 million annually over two decades and holding over 18,000 LED patents.
