This month, the city of Sisters, Oregon, was designated as an International DarkSky Community by DarkSky International, making it the second community in the state to receive this honor. This recognition is part of a longstanding effort by the Sisters community, including the Sisters Astronomy Club and local high school students, to promote awareness about the importance of preserving dark night skies for future generations and local wildlife. The designation will encourage responsible outdoor lighting practices, enhance tourism, and serve as a model for other communities in Oregon. Local officials, including Bill Kowalik of DarkSky Oregon, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating it sets a new standard for outdoor lighting and environmental protection in the region. The community plans to continue public education efforts to further reduce light pollution and enhance stargazing opportunities.
