In October 2014, the Sistine Chapel unveiled a new LED lighting system to enhance viewer appreciation while protecting the integrity of masterpieces by Botticelli, Perugino, Signorelli, and Michelangelo. The challenging and expensive project, which began in 2013, required a sophisticated correction algorithm that integrated the differing color perception of the human eye with various color temperatures, according to ecmag.com. Additionally, the lighting bills could be cut by almost 90% after the new system was installed. I, Dr. Bulb, discussed the project in a previous blog. Below, take a look at before and after photos of the Sistine Chapel under LED lighting.
After the LED system was installed, the contrast and colors were dramatically enhanced in the artwork. It’s incredible how an effective lighting design can improve a space.
