Increasing light pollution is obscuring the night sky for many Americans, with only 20% able to view the Milky Way from home. However, initiatives in Kirksville, Missouri, particularly at Thousand Hills State Park, are paving the way for healthier nighttime environments. The park, recognized as an “Urban Night Sky Place,” is implementing smarter lighting solutions that reduce glare and energy waste while benefiting both wildlife and human health. State park staff, along with local students, have started retrofitting outdoor lights with amber LEDs and fully shielded fixtures to mitigate light pollution and enhance visibility. Despite ongoing challenges, there’s hope that these efforts will inspire broader changes across communities to preserve the beauty of the night sky for future generations.
