On March 14, Sony announced the launch of its next-generation RGB LED backlight technology system, which boasts a remarkable peak brightness of 4000 nits. Set to enter mass production in 2025, this innovative system is expected to debut in a commercial product at CES in January 2026. Succeeding Sony’s 2004 introduction of the first full-array RGB LED backlight, this advancement features independently driven RGB LEDs that deliver a wide color gamut—covering over 99% of DCI-P3 and approximately 90% of the ITU-R BT.2020 color standards. The technology allows for dynamic power allocation that adjusts brightness and color gradients based on scene specifics, promising improved contrast and color accuracy. Collaborations with MediaTek for control processors and ROHM for LED driver ICs highlight Sony’s commitment to advancing display technology. Other manufacturers like Hisense, Samsung, and TCL are also making strides in RGB LED backlight technologies, indicating a competitive landscape in high-performance display solutions.
