Bengaluru’s South zone leads the city in streetlight numbers as the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) embarks on a major LED streetlight conversion initiative. Currently, out of 80,584 streetlights in the zone, 55,703 are outdated vapour lamps, marking it as the highest electricity consumer among the city’s total of over 5.3 lakh streetlights. The BBMP plans to replace more than 2 lakh vapour lamps with energy-efficient LEDs over the next eight months. Residents, particularly in Mahadevapura, have expressed concerns about inadequate lighting in their areas, highlighting safety issues. The project aims to curb electricity costs, enhance visibility, and improve safety citywide, with completion expected within six months following the start of physical work.
