The Government of Asturias has initiated an innovative project to transform an old mine shaft in Laviana into Spain’s first underground greenhouse, part of the Agroalnext program aimed at fostering green, digital, and climate-resilient agriculture. Minister of Science, Industry, and Employment, Borja Sánchez, recently visited the site, where substrate-grown crops are being tested under LED lighting. The pilot project, located in the La Raya gallery of the Carrio well, involves various plant species, including culinary sprouts, aromatic herbs, and halophytes. Developed by the Regional Agri-Food Research and Development Service (Serida) and supported by local mining company Hunosa, this initiative highlights Agriculture 4.0 as a sustainable option for former mining regions. The underground greenhouse aims to leverage consistent temperature and humidity for year-round farming, aligning with both European agricultural strategies and global health initiatives.
