STARGAZING SEASON: The Summer Constellations Emerge as the Sun Shines Bright

Antares, the 15th brightest star in the night sky, glows a reddish hue at the heart of the constellation Scorpius, representing the “rival of Ares,” or Mars. Over the next week, Scorpius will be visible at nightfall near the south-southeast horizon, with its full figure appearing by midnight. Antares, a red supergiant star 700 times the size of the Sun, is accompanied by its stinger stars, Shaula and Lesath, known as the Cat’s Eyes. Stargazers can also look for the prominent Summer Triangle, featuring Arcturus, Vega, and Altair, as well as the waxing gibbous moon. The astronomical summer solstice occurs on June 20, marking the longest days of the year.
