Steubenville Council Reviews Lighting Project for Belleview Park Ballfield

In a recent Steubenville City Council meeting, officials agreed to procure a more detailed cost estimate for the Belleview Park ballfield lighting project, projected at approximately $1.5 million, which raised concerns among council members. Fourth Ward Councilman Royal Mayo voiced strong opposition, labeling the expense as excessive, especially given the dwindling participation in youth baseball. In contrast, Fifth Ward Councilman Ted Gorman argued for the project’s necessity, highlighting the current involvement of over 300 children in local leagues and the potential for attracting tournaments. The council ultimately decided to allocate $131,000 for the design work, with mixed sentiments about funding sources and the feasibility of staging the project. City Manager Jim Mavromatis underscored the importance of a comprehensive design to enhance grant application prospects, despite the apprehensions raised about committing to the expense without secured funding.
