The African Cities Research Consortium (ACRC) is conducting a study on street lighting effectiveness and availability in Lagos, focusing on its implications for community safety. At a recent event at the University of Lagos, the “Lagos street light Assessment (LASA)” initiative highlighted significant challenges related to inadequate street lighting, which residents linked to increased crime rates and insecurity in areas like Ilaje, Ajegunle, and Lagos Island. The engagement included discussions with urban experts, government officials, and community representatives, who recognized that better street lighting is crucial for reducing crime and enhancing socio-economic productivity. Findings indicated that both state and non-state actors contribute to insecurity, and stakeholders called for improved public-private partnerships and innovative solutions, such as solar lighting, to enhance safety in marginalized neighborhoods.
