Study Finds Connection Between Blue Light Exposure and Early Puberty, Faster Bone Development

New research from Gazi University, presented at the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology Meeting, has revealed concerning potential impacts of prolonged blue light exposure from screens on growth and development in young rats. The study found that rats exposed to increased blue light for six to 12 hours daily experienced accelerated bone growth and earlier onset of puberty compared to those in normal light conditions. However, this rapid maturation of growth plates may lead to premature cessation of growth, resulting in shorter adult height. While the findings are preliminary and need further investigation to determine their applicability to humans, they raise important questions regarding the effects of screen time on children’s health. The research team aims to explore the long-term consequences of blue light exposure on skeletal development, emphasizing the need for parents to consider setting screen time limits during critical growth periods.
