The Lighting Research Center (LRC) has conducted a study exploring the effects of different lighting conditions on alertness and sleep quality among daytime office workers. In a trial involving 19 participants from U.S. Department of State buildings in Washington, D.C., researchers tested a novel luminaire that delivered blue light in the morning and red light in the afternoon. Results indicated that morning exposure to blue light enhanced participants’ circadian rhythms, helping them wake up earlier, while afternoon red light reduced post-lunch drowsiness and increased perceived vitality and energy. This study represents the first evidence that combining red light with ambient white light serves as an effective alerting stimulus, ultimately supporting the idea that appropriate light exposure can significantly improve workplace alertness and circadian health.
