A recent study led by Australian researchers at Macquarie University suggests that illuminating surfboards with LED lighting on their undersides could reduce the risk of great white shark attacks. The study, titled ‘Counterillumination reduces bites by Great White Sharks,’ involved experiments with foam seal decoys in South Africa’s Mossel Bay, where the researchers found that using striped LED patterns diminished the sharks’ ability to recognize the decoys as prey. The researchers now intend to test this technology on prototype surfboards and evaluate its effectiveness in preventing attacks, potentially contributing to the reduction of the average 80 annual human fatalities caused by shark encounters.
