A recent study published in Nature Communications reveals that the enjoyment of music has a biological basis, with genetic factors playing a significant role. Led by researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, the study utilized a twin design to analyze data from over 9,000 twins, finding that approximately 54% of the variability in music enjoyment is linked to genetic differences. This enjoyment, or ‘music reward sensitivity’, was shown to be partly independent from general reward sensitivity and musical ability. The findings suggest that distinct genetic pathways influence various aspects of music enjoyment, such as emotional regulation and social interaction, providing insights into the complex relationship between genetics and human musicality—an area that has intrigued scientists since Darwin’s time.
