Gower, renowned for its picturesque countryside, has been designated as the first International Dark Sky Community in south Wales by DarkSky International. This prestigious recognition highlights Gower’s commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the night sky, which is increasingly compromised by light pollution affecting 99% of Europe and the USA. Swansea’s cabinet member for environment, Andrew Stevens, emphasized the magic of Gower’s night skies, noting that they offer spectacular views of stars and planets. The achievement is the result of collaborative efforts among local authorities, community groups, and environmental organizations, including the retrofitting of street lights to comply with dark sky standards. With the upcoming 70th anniversary of its Outstanding Natural Beauty status, Gower aims to enhance ecological awareness and attract tourism by showcasing both its diurnal and nocturnal splendor.
