Bright LED headlights are becoming a significant concern for motorists, with a recent survey indicating that 57% of drivers find them excessively bright and detrimental to road safety. Many report experiencing impaired vision, particularly during early morning and late-night drives. This issue is notably more pronounced among older drivers, with 36% of those over 65 reporting vision problems due to LED lights, compared to only 15% of younger drivers. Experts have highlighted that while LED headlights improve visibility for drivers, they can create glare that obscures hazards for others on the road. There are growing calls for legislation to regulate or possibly ban these headlights, with data showing that a substantial portion of the public supports such measures. Additionally, practical trials initiated by the Department for Transport aim to study glare causes and develop actionable recommendations for future regulations.
