The Ministry of Environment in Taiwan has announced a nationwide light bulb replacement campaign running from September 9 through the end of October, aiming to recycle approximately 1,100 tonnes of light bulbs while saving 220 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and reducing carbon emissions by 110 million kilograms. The initiative highlights the environmental hazards of traditional incandescent bulbs, which contain mercury, and promotes the switch to LED bulbs as both a sustainable and cost-effective alternative. Households replacing 20 bulbs could save about NT$2,000 (US$65) per year in electricity bills. With around 600 stores participating by offering incentives, the campaign marks its second year and is expected to enhance the recycling of materials like glass and metal. Companies involved, like Zhen Yu Hardware, report increased LED sales and a commitment to improving recycling rates.
