As International Dark-Sky Week approaches from April 21-28, residents are encouraged to reconsider their outdoor lighting practices to help reduce light pollution and restore visibility of the Milky Way. Excessive outdoor lighting not only diminishes our night sky but can also be mitigated through the use of appropriately chosen outdoor light fixtures that prioritize safety and security without over-illumination. Santa Barbara County has introduced a new Outdoor Lighting Ordinance aimed at promoting energy-efficient, neighbor-friendly, and wildlife-friendly lighting. Residents are urged to evaluate their light fixtures against the ordinance and consider factors such as appropriate lumens, shielding compliance, and the potential for light trespass. By choosing dark sky compliant fixtures and controls, individuals can contribute to enhancing the night sky for everyone in the region.
