Teton County in Wyoming Becomes the First Dark Sky-Certified County Globally

Teton County, Wyoming, has made history as the first county in the world to be designated an International DarkSky Community by DarkSky International. This recognition, which took nearly a decade to achieve, comes as part of efforts to combat light pollution by retrofitting or replacing all public lighting across the county by 2030. Spearheaded by Samuel Singer of Wyoming Stargazing, the initiative garnered unanimous support from local government after years of community outreach and education on preserving dark skies. The certification aims to protect natural nighttime ecosystems, improve public health, and enhance stargazing opportunities, with hopes of expanding similar efforts in Grand Teton National Park and beyond.
