Thailand’s Energy Ministry Promotes LED Lighting to Enhance Economic Energy Efficiency

Thailand is grappling with a persistent rise in electricity consumption, prompting the Ministry of Energy to encourage reduced usage to ensure a stable power supply. While power demands grow at approximately 3% annually—especially in residential areas at 4.3%—the challenge of developing new energy sources has been complicated by limited land availability and community acceptance. To promote sustainability, the Ministry advocates for energy-efficient appliances and the transition to LED lighting, which is 50% more efficient than traditional bulbs. Initiatives like replacing street lights with LEDs have already resulted in significant reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions. It’s estimated that widespread adoption of LED lighting could save an additional 300 million units of power each year.
