Threat of Light Pollution Looms Over Chile’s Pristine Desert Skies

Astronomers in Chile are expressing concerns about light pollution threatening the dark skies vital for their research, particularly around the renowned Paranal Observatory in the Atacama Desert. Currently, light pollution sits at about 1%, but with increasing urban and industrial projects, including mining and renewable energy developments, experts worry this percentage could rise. Angel Otarola from the Chilean Astronomical Society emphasized the urgency in preserving the region’s darkness as high-quality astronomical sites face encroachment from nearby infrastructures. Despite claims from AES Andes, the company behind the controversial Inna green hydrogen project, that coexistence with astronomy is feasible, concerns remain. Chile’s government is actively seeking a balanced approach to ensure both the growth of the energy sector and the preservation of its world-class astronomical resources.
