The annual Perseid meteor shower, named after the constellation Perseus, has been illuminating the skies since July 17 and will continue until August 24. With its most spectacular phase expected to peak on August 12, stargazers are advised to look towards the heavens between midnight and 5:30 a.m. for optimal viewing of up to 60 meteors per hour. The phenomenon occurs as Earth passes through the debris trail left by comet Swift-Tuttle, creating bright streaks of light as fragments burn up upon entering the atmosphere. Scotland, celebrated for its dark skies, offers prime locations such as Galloway Forest Park and the Isle of Rum for a breathtaking experience. Recent research highlights Shetland as a top destination for witnessing this year’s display, thanks to its minimal light pollution and favorable conditions.
