Stargazers across the United States are in for a spectacular sight tonight as a powerful geomagnetic storm brings the northern lights farther south than usual. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a G4-level storm watch due to a strong coronal mass ejection (CME) that hit Earth earlier today. This event could make the aurora borealis visible in 23 states, including Michigan, Illinois, and Oregon, with the best viewing conditions between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time in rural areas away from light pollution. Although recent forecasts indicate that the peak visibility of the auroras may diminish due to the current orientation of the magnetic field, NOAA encourages people to venture outside for a chance to see this rare celestial display, even as wildfire smoke may impact visibility in some regions.
