Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is set to enhance Kaikōura’s night sky by replacing old sodium street lights along State Highway 1 with energy-efficient LED lighting, starting next month. This initiative follows Kaikōura’s recent accreditation as an international dark sky sanctuary, aimed at protecting the endangered Hutton’s shearwater birds that have been disoriented by street lights and crashed in the area. The new lighting will direct illumination downwards, improving visibility for pedestrians and drivers while minimizing light pollution that threatens local wildlife. The project, which will include upgrades at multiple intersections, is applauded by local officials for its potential environmental benefits and contribution to the district’s dark sky status.
